Today I’m inspired by these breathtaking works on paper by artist Karen Margolis. Karen integrates art and science with these works that are psychological portraits, capturing interior moments frozen in time. Karen says: I translate meticulously gathered data on thoughts and feelings into negative space and color-coded dots that produce fields of molecular patterns. Colors are coordinated to a flow chart I developed that categorizes and assigns a Pantone reproducible color to each emotion. The works, evocative of the interplay between neurotransmitters and chemicals in the brain, reveal patterns of emotional progressions. Wow, right? How great is that?
Burning holes in paper and adding pieces of maps are two of the processes Karen uses to both deconstruct and construct her art – using the circle motif for both positive and negative space. I’m fascinated by her research and thinking and so taken by her art. Karen Margolis’ website has many more examples of her works on paper as well as beautiful sculptures… I hope this glimpse inspires you to take a look.
