Iveth Morales is the creator of The Angry Weather Jewelry. I stumbled across Iveth on Instagram (as you do) and I thought you might enjoy taking a peek into her creative space and life in Space to Create this week. Iveth lives in Montreal and takes her inspiration from natural phenomenons, her native Mexico and her love for home.
Meet Iveth…
These rings are part of a new collection which is inspired by the sun, light, and sunsets, rudimentary jewelry (like people used to make thousands of years ago) and the search for something simpler and very easy to wear.
Where do you live?
I live in an cozy apartment, surrounded by old maple trees with my beloved husband, Alex, and our 4-year-old energetic, funny and lovely daughter, Amelia, in beautiful Montreal, Canada.
Where do you create?
In my home studio: I took one of the rooms in our apartment and made it my space to create. One of the things I love the most about my studio is that is bright and spacious. I like to keep it organized and to fill it with things that inspire me.
When do you create? Is it a full time job?
It is, although I divide the best part of my days taking care of my little one and making jewelry or things related with my business. Having a home studio and being my own boss is awesome but sometimes house chores can be pretty distracting which means spending extra hours at the studio to keep up with things! The best times for me to create are the quiet mornings or late at night while I listen to music.
What path led you to this creative place?
Oh, many things! But I think it all started when my husband and I arrived in Canada from Mexico (where we were born and raised). I found myself for the first time in ages with free time to do whatever I wanted. So I started taking jewelry classes as I always felt so drawn to jewelry making (I used to make bead and wire jewelry in Mexico and sell it to my coworkers and family). I fell in love with the craft, and I decided to start selling the pieces I was making. When it went well I was so happy so I just continued to work, learn and grow. It’s great to discover that each day new little roads open on this creative path.
What’s your elevator pitch? How do you describe what you do?
I make lovely objects in sterling silver, gold and bronze to be worn by the dreamer and the free spirited. Or so I think!
How would you describe yourself in six words?
I always find hard to describe myself but I guess I know I’m a dreamer, caring, loving and young at heart! And obviously I don’t respect the rules.
Where do you find inspiration and motivation?
Inspiration comes from all around: a place, a memory, a shape, a song, a book, a trip to someplace new, an illustration, a pebble, a tree, my family…there’s so much everywhere! I guess the important thing is to keep myself tuned to the things I love and enjoy so ideas come flowing.
Motivation for me can be found in the silliest of things, like when my studio is clean and organized I feel like I can’t wait to get my hands dirty and make, make, make! I also feel motivated when I make new jewelry, create new things. Receiving emails from happy costumers telling me how much they love their new jewelry or how glad they were with my service, or people telling me how they like my jewelry is really encouraging and appreciated!
What are the essential items in your workspace?
My bench, my saw, files, hammers, motor, torch and pliers… those I can’t work without! Also essential are materials like silver plate, wax, wire and chain. My computer and packing material are also a pretty important part of my studio.
What advice do you have for aspiring creatives?
Believe in what you do, believe in yourself, be your biggest fan! Follow your own path and surround yourself with what inspires you.
Do you have a dream that you’d love to fulfill?
To travel the world; to have a lovely brick and mortar shop for my jewelry; to see my family happy and healthy everyday and lately, I dream of becoming a great gardener.
